Sankofa News!

Welcome to Newsletter No. 2.

January ......  Many of you signed up for Sankofa’s website at the Suzuki Night Market (thanks very much) – the Night Market finished for the season on 29th February 2008 –it was a great way for Sankofa to start selling products and start to get known around the traps.

The last Night Market was very busy as word had spread that the season had come to an end – it was a lot of fun too (especially as we were next to the cocktail stall and it was only fair to support fellow traders (tetra packed cocktails – who would’ve thought?)!

February ..... In the last two months we’ve started some serious hunting for a shop to lease – nothing suitable has come up yet but you’ll be the first to know when it does – so watch this space.

March ....  This weekend we’re off to Beechworth in regional Victoria – the town of the famous Beechworth Bakery bee sting (that’s a very delicious custardy, cakey treat for the uninitiated).

Easter weekend sees Beechworth celebrate with its Golden Horsehoes Festival and in its second year, the Beechworth Make Poverty History (MPH) Family Day will also be held on Easter Sunday. There’ll be music, education and advocacy talks and information stalls, fair trade stalls, food etc. - so why not drop in if you’re in the neighbourhood – we’d love to see you.

Don't forget to tell your friends about Sankofa - just click on the 'Pass it On' button on the left-hand side of this newsletter to forward to them.

Happy Easter - Kym Pointon

New Products - Weaving from East Timor!

New Products - Weaving from East Timor!

We are very excited to have received our first order of handwoven products from East Timor – they only arrived yesterday so are hot off the press!

The products include scarves, shoulder bags, mobile phone bags and coin/MP3 bags and are made from the traditional tais cloth of East Timor – tais weaving has significant cultural and social signficance for the East Timorese and as with most traditional weaving, there are no written patterns as the weaver creates this important textile.

The products are woven by women in a weaving collective in the south east of East Timor and bought to Australia by their partner organisation ETWA (East Timor Women Australia). They are a great example of how traditional techniques can be incorporated into modern products.

About ETWA

ETWA is a volunteer organisation based in Melbourne, Australia that was founded in 2004 by a group of friends studying Community Development.  The volunteers are committed to supporting the women of East Timor to improve their lives through sustainable textile enterprises while maintaining cultural integrity.

The dedicated volunteers at ETWA do a remarkable job getting the women’s products out of East Timor and into Australia.

Check out ETWA's website if you'd like to know more about what they do (they also take weaving tours to East Timor and have one planned for 2008) - www.etwa.org.au
